About the Job

Reporting to senior leadership, the Head of Payroll will be responsible for overseeing all payroll operations across the UK and Ireland, ensuring the timely, accurate, and compliant delivery of payroll services. You will lead a team of payroll professionals, drive process improvement, and build strong partnerships with HR, Finance, and external providers to maintain high standards of accuracy and efficiency.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Lead and manage payroll operations across multiple business units and jurisdictions
  • Ensure compliance with all statutory, tax, and reporting requirements in both the UK and Ireland
  • Maintain and strengthen internal controls to ensure accuracy and reduce risk
  • Oversee system integrations and payroll process improvements, promoting automation and standardisation
  • Develop and mentor payroll team members to enhance performance and capability
  • Partner closely with HR, Finance, and external vendors to ensure smooth payroll transitions and integrations
  • Support internal and external audits, ensuring full compliance with SOX and internal governance standards
  • Manage payroll budgets, monitor spend, and provide regular reporting and analysis
  • Lead payroll-related projects, including new system implementations and upgrades (e.g., SAP or similar platforms)

Your Skills & Experience

  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in payroll management, ideally within a large or multinational organisation
  • Proven leadership experience managing large or multi-site payroll teams
  • Expert knowledge of UK and Irish payroll legislation and compliance requirements
  • Strong technical experience with payroll and time & attendance systems
  • Advanced Excel and Microsoft Office skills
  • Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and problem-solving abilities
  • Proven track record in process improvement and system implementation
  • Experience within a SOX-controlled environment (desirable)
  • Project management experience, particularly with SAP or similar systems (advantageous)
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, HR, or a related discipline (essential)
  • Professional payroll certification such as CIPP or CPP (desirable)
  • Qualified Accountant or equivalent financial qualification is advantageous
