The Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA) exams are known for their depth, technical complexity, and intense preparation. Whether you’re sitting the CTA exams in Ireland or Northern Ireland, these last-minute tips will help you boost your exam strategy and walk in feeling confident.
The exam prep is well underway at this point, you know tax law inside-out! We are sure you have done every CTA past paper twice! BUT, in the final days/weeks leading up to your CTA exam, it’s not about learning more – it’s about strategy! Be smarter than your nerves…
You’ve already done the groundwork. Now, it’s time to fine-tune your technical knowledge. Instead of trying to memorise every single tax relief, focus on core principles. CTA exams love complex, real-world scenarios – it’s not about knowing everything, it’s about how you apply what you know.
Past papers are gold, but there’s no time for rewriting every answer. Look for common themes in the case studies- what areas of tax law are frequently tested? You will find that certain areas will often be central for every exam.
CTA exams sometimes give you limited facts. Don’t get stuck trying to figure out the unspoken. Make reasonable assumptions and move forward confidently. For example, if the question doesn’t specify, assume that the company is Irish resident unless told otherwise. It shows you’re thinking logically and applying your knowledge.
As you cram in your last hours of study, don’t skip breaks. Take time to rest your brain. A 10-minute walk can boost your focus and help you retain information better than hours of nonstop reading.
On the big day, stay calm (easier said than done, but try your best). Focus on clear, concise answers. There is no room and not enough time for perfectionism here. You will get marks for structured responses and demonstration of technical understanding, not flawless answers. Take your time and remember you’ve put the work in; now is the time to show it!
Good luck to everyone sitting the CTA exams this May – You’ve got this!
