Job hunting when you’re in a job

Looking for a new job while you are still employed can be a delicate situation. You don’t want your current employer to know that you are job searching, but you also want to find a job that is a better fit for your skills and career goals.

Keep it Confidential: It’s important to keep your job search confidential while you are still employed. Don’t use your work computer or email address to search for jobs. Also, be mindful of who you tell about your job search, and make sure to only share the information with trusted colleagues or friends outside of your workplace.

Use your Network: Networking is a powerful tool for finding a new job. Reach out to former colleagues, friends, and acquaintances in your industry to let them know that you are job searching. Attend industry events, join professional organizations, and connect with people on LinkedIn to expand your network.

Update your CV and LinkedIn Profile: Make sure your CV and LinkedIn profile are up-to-date and highlight your skills and accomplishments. Use keywords that are relevant to your industry and the types of jobs you are interested in. Also, make sure to keep your LinkedIn profile current with your current job title and responsibilities.

Be Selective: When applying for jobs, be selective about the positions you apply for. Make sure the job aligns with your skills and career goals. Also, be mindful of the company culture, work-life balance, and compensation and benefits package.

Schedule Interviews Wisely: Try to schedule interviews outside of work hours, if possible. If you have to take time off from work for an interview, try to schedule it during a time when it will be less disruptive to your work schedule.

Be Respectful: Finally, be respectful of your current employer and coworkers. Don’t bad-mouth your current job or employer during interviews or networking events. Also, give your employer plenty of notice if you decide to leave your current job.

Finding a new job while you are still employed can be challenging, but by keeping your job search confidential, networking, updating your CV and LinkedIn profile, being selective, scheduling interviews wisely, and being respectful, you can find a job that is a better fit for your skills and career goals. Remember to take your time, be patient, and stay focused on finding a job that is right for you.
